The capital, county seat and largest city in Arizona, Phoenix is located in Maricopa County. Phoenix real estate is referred to as "Hoozdo" in Navajo and "Fiinigis" in Western Apache. Appropriately enough, Hoozdo means "this place is hot". Phoenix is the sixth largest city and the eighth fastest growing metropolitan area in the US, which includes the additional suburban areas of Glendale, Peoria and Surprise. The City of Phoenix is also the largest populated capital city in the entire US.
Phoenix History Jack Swilling, a Wickenburg resident, passed through the area that would eventually become Phoenix real estate in 1867. What greeted him was land that was conducive to farming, though lacking water. A year later, he and others from Wickenburg had dug a short canal from the Salt River and founded a small farming colony to the east of present day Phoenix and to the northwest of what would eventually become the city of Tempe.
The area went through several names (Swilling's Mill, Hellinwg Mill, Mill City, East Phoenix Swilling) before eventually becoming Phoenix.
The town of Phoenix was officially recognized on May 4, 1868, when the Yavapai County formed a voting precinct there. Jack Swilling served as postmaster when the Phoenix post office began in June 1868. In October of 1870, the land was surveyed and selected as a suitable piece of unimproved public land for a town site. They recommended the site chosen be called Phoenix.
When the railroad brought merchandise through Phoenix real estate in the 1880s, the city became a major trade hub, connecting products from both the east and west coasts of the country.
The 1940's marked more turning points, as the war changed Phoenix real estate from farming to distribution. Military supplies were produced in mass quantities in Phoenix during World War II. The Hyder military training center brought hundreds of soldiers into the Phoenix area. After the war, people continued to settle in the Phoenix area.
Public and Private Education Public education in the Phoenix area is provided by over 30 school districts. The Phoenix Union High School District operates most of the public high schools operating in Phoenix real estate. The main institution of higher education in the area is Arizona State University, with its main campus located in Tempe, and satellite campuses in Phoenix and Mesa. ASU is currently one of the largest public universities in the US. In addition to ASU are the fast-growing Western Governors University (an online non-profit university), the headquarters of the University of Phoenix (the nation's largest private, for profit university), the University of Advancing Technology (a small private technology oriented school), ten community colleges and two skills centers throughout Maricopa County that provide adult education and job training.
Fun and Games in Phoenix The city's award-winning Recreation and Parks Department oversees the cultural and art venues, more than 100 urban parks, city golf courses and community centers. It also offers summer recreation programs for thousands of Phoenix children at many different sites throughout the city. Phoenix offers hundreds of miles of hiking trails, public pools, amusement parks, dog parks, the Phoenix Zoo, Wrigley Mansion and the Desert Botanical Garden. Whatever your interest or age, the city has a recreational experience for everyone. |
